SYNOPSIS
The story of Mohabbatein is set in one of the most prestigious boarding
schools of the country - Gurukul. It is governed with an iron hand by the
autocratic disciplinarian Narayan Shankar (Amitabh Bachchan). He runs the
school keeping in mind its three pillars: tradition, honour and discipline.
Every year he reminds the fresh batch of students that the outside world
is closed to them once they have decided to enroll. And he warns them that
any flouting or bending the rules will not be tolerated.
To this institution come three youngsters. Boys from different parts of
the country, from different backgrounds, with different characteristics,
with different stories to tell. They enter this cold and strict atmosphere
where only excellence is encouraged, where fun and frivolity is frowned
upon, where laughing or sharing a joke is deemed unacceptable. It is here
that Vicky (Uday Chopra), Samir (Jugal Hansraj) and Karan (Jimmy Shergill)
from a bond of friendship. A bond that will require them to face the most
difficult tests and make choices that they never thought that they would
have to make. Because it is these three boys that break the cardinal rule
of Gurukul and Narayan Shankar.. they fall in love.
When Vicky, Samir and Karan, first meet Ishika (Shamita Shetty), Sanjana
(Kim Sharma) and Kiran (Preeti Jhangiani) respectively, their lives are
put in a turmoil as they discover love for the first time but the fear of
Narayan Shankar stops them from pursuing their dreams. It is then the sound
of a violin breaks the cold silence of Gurukul. Raj Aryan (Shah Rukh Khan)
enters the gates of Gurukul. With a violin in hand and a smile on his lips,
he comes to spread love and music and encourages the youngsters to follow
their hearts.
Now Mohabbatein slowly becomes a story of the battle between Narayan Shankar
and Raj Aryan. Two stubborn men who live their lives with completely opposing
principles. One who stands for love and everything that the heart encompasses
and other who stands for discipline and fear and who believes that love
only leads to pain and weakness.
When Narayan Shankar returns from a business trip and discovers that Raj
Aryan has gone against his dictate and hosted a dance party with girls from
the neighbouring all-girls school, he is furious. He tells Raj Aryan that
he must leave Gurukul. Raj Aryan reminds him of the contract he had signed
when he joined Gurukul and refuses to leave. He reveals that he is actually
Raj A Malhotra - the former Gurukul student whom Narayan Shankar had rusticated
for falling in love with his daughter Megha (Aishwarya), an incident which
led to Megha committing suicide. Raj Aryan now challenges Narayan Shankar
to try and stop the spread of love in his Gurukul.
Narayan Shankar accepts the challenge. Inspired by Raj Aryan, the three
love stories blossom. When Narayan Shankar finds out about this, he forbids
the students from leaving the premises. The love affairs reach a peak on
Valentine' Day and when Amitabh finds the students and their teacher celebrating
in the market square, he calls the three boys to his office and tells them
to pack up their bags and leave. That night, Raj Aryan goes to Narayan Shankar
and admits defeat. He falls at Narayan Shankar's feet and pleads with him
not to punish the students. Narayan Shankar asks him to apologise before
the entire assembly the following morning and tell all the students that
he was wrong. Before leaving Raj Aryan informs him that the way he sees
it, the real loser is Narayan Shankar who has forfeited the love of the
two people in the world who loved him the most.
Narayan Shankar has a change of heart and the following morning at the
assembly, Narayan Shankar tells the students that he was wrong. That it
is time to hand over the reins of Gurukul to the new generation. He names
Raj Aryan as his successor and with tears in his eyes, Raj Aryan touches
Narayan Shankar's feet for the first time.
