SYNOPSIS
Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Anjali (Kajol) study at the ultra-hip St. Xavier's
College. Anjali is a tomboy and though Rahul and she are best friends, they
think of each other in terms of romance. One day, the principal's daughter
Tina (Rani Mukherjee) comes to St Xavier's from Oxford to continue her studies.
For Anjali, Tina is a third member of their gang. For Rahul, however, she
is much more.
Anjali finally realizes that she is in love with Rahul, and summon the
courage to tell him about her feelings, but before she gets a chance to
express her love, Rahul informs Anjali that he is falling in love with Tina,
oblivious of his best friend's feelings for him. A broken-hearted Anjali
decides to leave the college mid-term. Tina, having always suspected Andale's
true feelings for Rahul, understands why she is leaving and is remorseful
about coming in between two friends but is unable to stop her.
The film revolves around the story being narrated to little Anjali jr.
(Sana Saeed), Rahul and Tina's eight-year-old daughter through the letters
her mother left for her when she died due to complications at childbirth.
Tina tells her daughter to fulfill her dream and re-unite her father and
Anjali, who could have eventually fallen in love and who have not seen each
other for the past nine years.
Anjali, in the meanwhile, has matured from a tomboy to a beautiful lady
and is engaged to be married to Aman Mehra (Salman Khan). Anjali jr. finds out
that Anjali conducts an annual summer camp and throws a tantrum to persuade
her father to allow her to go. When Rahul still doesn't relent, she hatches
a plan with her grandmother and sneaks off anyway, leaving behind a note
of apology. At Camp Sunshine, little Anjali befriends Anjali without revealing
her identity. Worried about his daughter, Rahul too arrives at the camp
and is stunned to see his tomboyish best friend once again.
The best friends begin to fall in love and everything proceeds smoothly
until her fiancé Aman pays a surprise visit to the camp. While Anjali jr.
continues her childish attempts at dissuading Aman from marrying Anjali,
the chances seem remote as the wedding preparations are in full swing. Anjali
returns home to her marriage and future but at the wedding mandap, Aman
startles everyone by giving her away to Rahul, saying that he sees in her
eyes for Rahul the love he never saw in her eyes for him. And the best friends
finally become lovers.
