SYNOPSIS
Yashovardhan Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) and his wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) have raised their sons Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), showering them with great love and affection. Yash has tried to pass on the values that he cherishes and holds in great regard. Values that he has imbibed from his forefathers. Values such as a deep respect for one's elders, honouring the family name and giving an unending commitment to the rich traditions and heritage of the family-the Raichand family.

Nandini on the other hand has different dreams and aspirations for her sons. Her own dreams of love which she would like her sons to experience-both her sons, but especially Rahul as she shares a special bond with him. An unusual bond, a bond that will help her live through the torturous years when he leaves the Raichand house. A bond that has ben cultivated with love- love for a child who was not meant to be. A child who brought laughter and happiness into her empty world. A child who was adopted. Rahul's adoption was always a secret , a forbidden topic in the Raichand household. But, ever since Rahul was told about it at the tender age of eight it became the reason for his unending devotion and gratitude to his parents- especially his father. His father who he holds with the highest regard and whom he would never disrespect or disobey. Who's every word, every wish becomes an unwritten commandment for him- a commandment that he would never break, that he thought he would never break, but unfortunately does....Because Rahul falls in love.

Rahul falls in love with Anjali (Kajol) a bubbly, effervescent girl from Delhis' Chandni Chowk. A girl who dotes on her little sister Pooja (Kareena Kapooor). A girl who cares madly about her ailing father Bauji (Alok Nath), a girl who loves to dance wildly in the lanes where she lives and who is obsessed about everything Indian, especially cricket. A girl who Rahul marries and brings home. a girl who his father will never approve of. A girl who makes a proud man forget that he is a father and reminds a son that he is adopted.

So, Rahul decides to leave the mother who taught and encourages him to fall in love. A mother whose every waking moment is then spent waiting eagerly for her eldest son to return home. A mother whose younger son Rohan makes a promise to reunite the family, A son who seeks out his eldest brother and reminds him that...
