SYNOPSIS
Based on the hit Broadway musical, West Side Story, Mansoor Khan's film
opens in Vasco, a small town in Goa. The picture-perfect scenario has one
spot of bother - two youthful gangs who cannot see eye to eye. The Eagle
gang is headed by Christian Max (Shah Rukh), who dislikes the newer Hindu
entrants into town. Prakash (Sharad Kapoor) is the leader of the rival Bichchoo
gang. The two gangs regularly have showdowns on the streets of Vasco, which
are ended only by the arrival of the police inspector (Sharat Saxena) or
intervention of the local priest.
Prakash's younger brother Rahul (Chandrachur Singh) returns to his hometown
after completing his studies in Mumbai. The city-bred Rahul does not agree
with Prakash's violent principles. And when he sees Max's twin sister Shirley
(Aishwarya Rai) it's love at first sight for him. He changes his plans of
returning to the city and decides to stay back and open a pastry shop. At
first, Shirley derides Rahul and even sabotages his big consignment by planting
a basketful of rats in his shop. But slowly Rahul wins over he respect by
maintaining his self respect in the face of Max's acts of violence.
On the side, Prakash and his goons help an unscrupulous real estate agent
to vacate houses in Vasco for a fee. Rahul suggests a more intelligent way
for Prakash to make money by finding out the real owners of the football
field. At the Land Records' office, Rahul stumbles upon the name of Mrs
D'souza. He goes to meet her and learns that Max and Shirley, the illegitimate
children of the Portuguese owner of the town, Vasco.
When Rahul confronts Max and reveals this to him, Max is disturbed. Meanwhile,
Prakash and his goons plan to kill Max with his own gun to make it appear
like suicide and take away the land. They trace Max to an abandoned graveyard
and begin to put their plan in action. Rahul finds out about the plan and
goes behind them. But by the time he arrives with Shirley, it is too late.
He sees his brother Prakash dead and Max is arrested by the police for the
murder.
An experience in jail sobers Max. In court, only Rahul's timely testimony
saves Max from a death rap. When he comes out of jail, Max himself goes
to Rahul and his mother and asks for his hand in marriage for Shirley.
