SYNOPSIS
The Mayurs are a wealthy Indian family settled in Britain since five generations
with a pronounced anti-India attitude. The elder son of the fifth generation,
Hari Mayur, is a rebel. He loves India and when his father tries to marry
him off forcibly to an English girl, he flies away to India on his private
plane. His plane crashes in the ocean and he is given up as dead by his
family.
Unknown to them, Hari survives and is found on an island near Bombay by
a young girl, Bijuriya, and her adolescent sister Katariya (Rajeshwari).
When he regains consciousness he hears the news of his death and decides
to hide his real identity so that he can be free to live in India. He gets
married to Katariya and just when they are about to have a child both are
killed in an accident. Their young son is left at the care of young Bijuriya.
Bijuriya brings up Nandlal (Master Sunny) on her own despite the fact that
she is not yet even a teenager herself.
Years pass by and the grown up Bijuriya (Sonali Bendre) dances in a pub
for her livelihood, constantly battling advances of the pub owner Banjo
(Baba Brahmabhatt) who is in love with her. Nandu grows up hating his foster
mother's profession and dreams of getting her married to a respectable young
man. In order to raise money for the same he bunks school and polishes shoes
and sells cigarettes on the streets of Bombay.
In Britain, the snobbish younger brother of Hari, Vikram Mayur (Shah Rukh
Khan), prospers in business and becomes a celebrity. The news of his achievement
reaches Madadgar (Saeed Jaffrey), a friendly lawyer who is like a father
figure to Bijuriya. He schemes to bring the pro-British Vikram down to India
by filing a case against him on charges of fraud. When Vikram comes down
to India and learns about his brother's life here, he takes it upon himself
to take Master Mayur (as he calls Nandu) back to Britain with him. He doesn't
consider it a difficult task being under the impression that his wealth
can buy him anything.
The club dancer Bijuriya meets him disguised as a queen and he is immediately
smitten by her looks but she makes it clear to him that she will not part
with Nandu under any circumstances. On his trip to her island he encounters
Nandu. Upon befriending him, he comes to know about his truancy and also
discovers the true identity of Bijuriya. When he learns that she is a club
dancer, he gets more obsessed with the idea of taking Nandu away with him.
When Bijuriya asks him for proof of Nandu's blood relation with the Mayur
family Vikram produces them and Nandu is brought to him. As time passes
Nandu develops a feeling of awe towards Vikram and his wealth which seems
grand in contrast to Bijuriya's vernacularism. Seeing Nandu transforming
into Master Mayur makes Bijuriya sad but she tolerates everything as Nandu's
happiness is all that matters to her.
When Vikram files a case against Bijuriya, Madagar convinces him that a
better way to have Bijuriya dancing to his tunes would be to make her fall
in love with him. Madagar also suggests to Bijuriya that it would be a better
way out to charm Vikram than fight him legally. Their alliance is sparked
by Vikram rescuing Bijuriya from a goon, Bhim Khalasi (Kiran Kumar), who
had been infatuated by her for a long time. While Vikram is only toying
with Bijuriya, she actually falls in love with him and the match is noticed
by Nandu who had all along dreamt of it. Nandu gets a rude shock when he
takes the proposal of Bijuriya's marriage to Vikram and Vikram denies any
involvement with Bijuriya. In response, Nandu renounces all the wealth of
Vikram, making it clear that nothing in the world can take him away from
his foster mother.
When Bijuriya finds Nandu missing she accosts Vikram who reveals to her
all that Nandu has been doing for her sake. The meeting is eye-opening for
both of them after the meeting and Vikram begins to realise how much Bijuriya
loves Nandu and how big a sacrifice it was on her part to renounce him.
He keeps his own feelings aside and goes with a huge sum of money to Bijuriya
to pay her off.
Once Vikram and Nandu leave, Bijuriya puts the money in a bag with Nandu's
toys and gives it to Madagar to be given to Nandu. Banjo comes and forcibly
takes her away to sell her off to Bhim Khalasi. At the airport, the bag
opens by accident and Vikram and Nandu realise that Bijuriya had been lying
all along. They rush back in time to rescue Bijuriya. In the end, Vikram
and Bijuriya are married, fulfilling Nandu's dream.
