SYNOPSIS
Chaudhary Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri) is a London-based immigrant. He, along
with his wife Lajwanti (Farida Jalal) and two daughters Simran (Kajol) and
Chutki (Pooja Ruparel), has been living in London for more than a decade.
A traditional Indian at heart Chaudhary Baldev Singh has brought up his
daughters with the belief that they are strangers in this foreign land and
are here for purely financial reasons. And that they will one day return
to Punjab…to their roots.
Simran, like any other teenage girl, dreams of her perfect man and waits
for him to walk into her life. She soon realizes the futility of her dreams
as her marriage has already been arranged to a man in Punjab whom she has
never met - her father's best friend's son Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi). She
asks her father for only one gift - a one-month holiday on the Eurorail
with her friends.
Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan) another London-based immigrant is a spoilt
playboy. His father Dharamvir Malhotra (Anupam Kher) indulges him since
he never enjoyed his own youth in the struggle to earn a living.
Raj and Simran along with other friends meet on the Eurorail. Initially
Raj teases Simran and Simran dislikes him. Raj finally ends up causing her
to miss the train. Separated from the group, they discover their true feelings
for each other. Raj is aware of Simran's pre-planned marriage and feels
there is no hope. The night Simran returns home, she confides in her mother
about her feelings for Raj. Her father overhears the conversation and gets
furious. He decrees that the entire family should leave for India the following
morning. Meanwhile, Raj is motivated by his father who tells him that if
he truly loves Simran he has to go and get her.
The next morning Raj reaches Simran's house only to find the family has
left for India. He follows the family to Punjab, where he befriends Simran's
fiancé Kuljeet and without revealing his identity wins over the entire family
consisting of Amrish Puri's mother (Achla Sachdev), his unmarried sister
(Himani Shivpuri), his best friend (Satish Shah), his wife (Farida Jalal)
and most importantly, Amrish Puri himself.
