SYNOPSIS
Shambhu Rathod (Anupam Kher) and his son Roop (Shah Rukh Khan) are two folk singers from Rajasthan who make their living by entertaining tourists at hotels in Jaipur. The father's complaint of a nagging cough turns out to be throat cancer and they leave for Bombay to find a cure.

They arrive in Bombay and admit Shambhu into the hospital. Roop goes looking for his friend from the village who is works in a five star hotel. On arriving there he finds the birthday bash of hotel owner Ajay Narang's (Naseerudin Shah) sister Reshma (Ramya) in progress. Roop gets a chance to sing and entertain them that night and Ajay Narang and his sister take a liking to Roop and even offer him a job as a singer in their hotel.

On his way back, Roop encounters a beautiful girl who saves him from getting knocked down by a speeding car. He forgets to ask her name so he names her 'Zindagi'. In hospital, Shambhu Rathod meets a lively nurse Pooja (Pooja Bhatt) and feels strongly that she is the right daughter-in-law. Meanwhile Roop is in love with his Zindagi (Pooja) and proposes marriage to her.

Reshma starts falling obsessively in love with Roop and she uses her brother's power to coerce him into loving her. Roop is forced to sell his heart, his voice and his love to Ajay Narang because he needs money to save his father's life.
